Six tips to keep your rooms cool in Summer

Six tips to keep your rooms cool in Summer

Summer is a season to enjoy but when you have to face unbearable temperatures at home, it rapidly becomes less pleasant.
If you want to keep rooms cool during summer then an air conditioner is great, but what if you don’t have one? Use these six tips to be prepared for Summer and face the heat without suffering.

1. Delay heat generating activities

Dishwashers, traditional ovens and even ironing and vacuuming all generate heat and that’s not what you want. Try to reduce these activities when it’s too hot outside or choose to do them early in the morning or at night.

2. Mini blinds or white window shades

If you don’t want the heat coming through your windows, install some white curtains or mini blinds. You can also try reflective film on your windows but use Velcro instead of adhesive to stick them as you might want to remove them during winter or when it is colder. If you’re a fan of making things yourself, you may also consider making your own blinds with the products available in our haberdashery section.

3. Close your windows

Many people find this debatable: whether or not open windows during Summer? Not sure why really as hot air will enter your house or office when windows are open - even with blinds or curtains closed! That’s why we recommend closing windows during the day when it is hot and opening them at night or early in the morning when it’s cooler outside.

4. Transform your fan into an A/C

If you don’t have an air conditioner but do own a fan, you can transform it into an aircon! Just put a big bowl of ice in front of your fan and it will efficiently spread cool air in your room. It also works with frozen plastic water bottles as illustrated in this great article: “How to Make an Easy Homemade Air Conditioner from a Fan and Water Bottles”.
Although we don’t sell all our fans online yet – for a larger  choice you can always buy one in store if the heat gets too much for you!

5. Turn off lights when not used

Lights in a room can generate a lot of heat so when you don’t need them, turn them off. Not only will it help with the heat in your room but it will also help reduce your energy bill.

6. Lower the humidity

You might not think of this one, but humidity is a key contributor to increasing room temperature, so if you can, try to shower and do your laundry and dishwashing at night or early in the morning rather than the middle of the day.
What are your best tips to deal with the heat during Summer? Any tricks for those who don’t have an air conditioner? Share them with us on Twitter or Facebook.

What to put in your beach holiday suitcase

What to put in your beach holiday suitcase

Planning to go on holiday for a few days, two weeks or even more this year? We know how stressful packing can be, especially when you’re in a hurry afraid of forgetting something! Here’s a handy checklist to help you pack your suitcase with all the essentials for a sunny beach holiday.

1. Clothes

The first mistake many people make when going on holiday is taking too many clothes. Try to make a selection of 7 outfits for a one-week holiday, choosing only clothes you’re sure you will wear. Here’s the list of clothes you will certainly need:

  • Underwear
  • One Party dress or one smart shirt (for going out)
  • 3 or 4 skirts or pairs of shorts and 5 t-shirts
  • One casual dress (for the ladies)
  • 2 Pairs of shoes: for ladies one flat and comfortable and one classier, for men one pair of sandals or flip-flops and one pair of proper shoes

2. For the beachOctoTowel

If you’re just planning to relax during your holidays, the most important thing to bring will be beach clothes and accessories so don’t forget:

  • 2 Swimsuits/Swim shorts
  • 1 light top to use as a cover-up
  • Beach towel
  • Beach bag
  • Sunscreen
  • Hat
  • Sunglasses
  • A book
  • Sandals or flip-flops

3. Cosmetics and toiletriesKent_Toothbrush

If your hotel doesn’t provide toiletries don’t forget to bring your own :

  • Travel size shampoo, body lotion, shower gel and shaving cream
  • Essential make-up: try to think “multi-purpose make-up” and take items that will work in a warmer climate, like foundation with SPF and waterproof make-up.
  • Make-up remover
  • Toothbrush, toothpaste

4. Electronics

Think about your electronics if you want to take pictures, listen to music or anything else that requires power. Most important don’t forget the charger!

  • Camera
  • Phone Charger
  • Power convertor (If you’re travelling abroad)
  • Batteries
  • Hairdryer (optional. most hotels will have one, but it’s always good to pack a travel size one just in case or if your hair needssome TLC and there isn't one provided)

Now, you’re ready to go on holiday confident that you have packed all of the essentials that you will need! Some of our suitcases in-store make it even easier to pack and will save you a lot of time. The Samsonite Firelite for example has a zipped divider pad in the top compartment, for easy and organised packing.

What to bring for a perfect picnic

What to bring for a perfect picnic

We've been enjoying the best summer in years, so it's definitely picnic time. Here's a checklist of everything you should bring - apart from the food and drink - to enjoy this wonderful time with your friends or family.

1. Picnic basket or cool box

The first thing you need for your picnic is a large cool box. Some of them have different compartments, making them really useful for organising what you need for your picnic, as well as keeping things chilled. If you’re not going too far and don’t need to use a cool box, think about a picnic basket or a cool bag. They are easy to carry and they come in lots of different sizes.

2. Picnic blanket

If you are planning to picnic in a park or in a field, a blanket will also be really useful to keep you and the food off of the grass. Choose one that is large enough, waterproof and foldable so it will be easy to store and carry.

Melamine tumblers

3. Plastic dinnerware (cups, plate, utensils) and a cutting knife

You might not want to use your best dinnerware for a picnic, so the best thing to do is buy plastic cups, plates and cutlery. For example, you can buy the Bloom Pack of 4 Melamine tumblers that are perfect for picnicing and can be re-used; there is great picnic dinnerware in store and on the website. Don’t forget to bring at least one good cutting knife and a wooden board so you will be able to easily cut things.

4. Mason drinking jar

Mason jars are all the rage in bars, so why not follow the trend and save space at the same time? Try making your own lemonade or flavoured water for your picnic in a Mason jar and just add a straw to drink: it’s a great way to present your drinks for summer. Why not try this recipe for homemade lemonade - it’s easy to make and store: http://inspiredcraftideas.com/easy-homemade-lemonade.

5. Cushions

If you want to be really comfortable during your picnic bring some cushions or even foldable chairs. They may be a bit difficult to carry, but after a few hours of sitting on the ground your friends will start wishing they had brought some as well!

6. Lantern

If your picnic extends into the evening, a lantern or lamp torch will be really useful. Citronella candles will also help to keep wasps and biting insects away: they hate the smell.

7. Some outdoor games, a portable radio, and a camera

To add much more fun to your picnic, don’t forget to bring outdoor games; it can be cards, water guns, a frisbee, a ball or even rackets. You might also want to play some music and for that a portable radio will do just fine; you can also try to put your phone in an empty glass to make a great DIY speaker. And if you want to capture every moment of your picnic, don’t forget to bring your camera!

Jason Suncream

8. Sunscreen and hats

Outdoor activities can quickly become much less fun when you catch too much sun or even get sunstroke; bring sunscreen and wear a hat during your picnic to prevent this. If you have toddlers, think about beach tents so they won’t be exposed for the whole day. The Jason Family Sunblock is suitable for everyone in the family to prevent sunburn.

At Boswells, we have everything you need to organise the perfect picnic! From dinnerware to sunscreen, we guarantee your picnic will be a success and create an enjoyable summer memory!

6 Beauty tips for summer

6 Beauty tips for summer

Summer is here and we want to let our skin breathe, look great and be healthy. If you’re planning to go on holiday somewhere sunny and hot then it’s even more important to give your skin a break, and do everything you can to help it resist the sun, the heat and everything else that can damage it. Here are some summer beauty tips for you and your skin.

Avene Thermal Water Spray1. Hydrate yourself: Probably one of the most important notes for summer is to hydrate not only yourself but also your skin. Always take a bottle of water every time you go out and find the best skincare to hydrate your skin whether you have dry, oily or a mixed type of skin. You can also use a facial spray mist when you need to refresh at home or at the office. Avene’s Eau Thermale, for example, will hydrate your face without ruining your make-up!

2. If you want to use make-up this summer, you should go for matte and waterproof products that will last even when it’s hot. You should also try to avoid thick foundation and use a cover stick as well as a BB or a CC cream for your daily make-up routine. These types of cream are lighter and will let your skin breath during summer. Try the Wala Tinted Day Cream to moisturise your skin and give it a perfect and natural finish for summer.

3. Don’t forget to use a sunscreen even when you don’t plan to spend lots of time in the sun. Choose your sunscreen depending on your skin type; for example, if your skin is really fragile then choose one with no less than a high SPF protection such as factor 50. You can also buy skincare and tinted moisturiser with SPF protection to stay protected all day long. Pierre Fabre have a complete sun cream protection range for all skin types, even the most sensitive. Find the best for you whether you want oil, a stick or body milk.

4. Heal your feet before and during summer: Being subjected to heels, sandals, and wedges will probably damage your feet during summer so you have to take care of them. You can use different types of cream for your feet, but most importantly remember to moisturise. You can even use coconut oil, as it removes impurities and moisturises dry skin if you leave it on overnight. Alternatively take a foot bath with some salt to help you relax after a long summer day.

Rimmel-natural-bronzer5. Body scrubbing can be really helpful during summer. A scrub removes dry and old skin cells and will also help eliminate toxins and encourage new skin cells to surface. It’s also the best way to make your tan last longer and keep your skin glowing all summer. Bomb Cosmetics surely have the best scented body scrub and in addition to the smell, they will leave your skin perfectly smooth.

6. Self-tan: If you want to prepare your skin for holidays or to give your tan a head start before summer, think about self-tan. You can use a cream, a gel or even a touch of bronzer on your cheeks can do the trick. Rimmel's Bronzer range is the perfect one for summer to perfectly match your skin tone for a fresh and natural finish.

You now have everything you need to start the summer and enjoy your holidays with these helpful beauty tips and perfect products for the season!
